Start with the filter and the outdoor unit. A restricted filter or a coil packed with cottonwood and dust accounts for most July calls.
Change the filter, then kill power at the disconnect and rinse the condenser coil from the inside out with a garden hose – never a pressure washer. If the indoor coil is frozen, run the fan only for an hour to thaw it. Refrigerant does not get consumed, so if it is low, there is a leak.
