Electrical in Edmond, Oklahoma
Sooner Home Services
Edmond is newer than most of Oklahoma – 26% of its 39,841 units predate 1980, which in practice means 200A service and modern code, where failures are devices and GFCIs rather than the wiring. Heating runs 70% utility gas to 28% electric. 39% has been built since 2000, so this is really two housing markets in one place and what fails depends on which half you are in.
What we get called for in Edmond
Generator connection with no interlock
A portable generator connected to house wiring without a transfer switch or interlock can backfeed the utility line and kill a lineman working to restore your power. Never use a double-male cord to feed a house circuit. If you have a generator, an interlock kit or transfer switch is the only correct way to connect it.
Burning smell, smoke or scorch marks at the panel
Do not open the panel. If it is safe to reach the main disconnect from outside the enclosure, shut it off; if it is not, leave the building. Call 911 for smoke or visible burning. Only after power is confirmed off does this become an electrician’s job.
Storm shelter power and lighting
In-garage and in-ground shelters are common here and often had power added informally. Damp locations need the right wiring method and GFCI protection.

Lightning surge damage to electronics
Central Oklahoma takes frequent and severe thunderstorms. A panel-mounted surge device plus point-of-use protection on expensive equipment is the layered approach that actually works. Neither alone does the whole job.
Panel has no spare spaces on a new house
Builders size panels to the house as delivered. If you intend to add a charger, a shop, or a pool, checking spare capacity now is cheaper than discovering it later.
What this costs here
| Panel mapping and labeling | $0 – do it yourself |
| Receptacle replacement | $22-38 each installed |
| GFCI receptacle installed | $185-300 |
| Fan-rated box retrofit | $230-430 |
| Panel replacement, 200A | $2,400-4,100 |
| Whole-house rewire, 2,600 sq ft | $15,000-26,000 |
Ranges reflect Edmond-area labor against a $351,400 median. Two of these you can do yourself for nothing.
Check these first
- Check the manufacture date on the back of a smoke alarm. Ten years is the service life whatever the battery says.
- Map the panel with a lamp and a helper, and label it. Free, and it is the first thing needed in an emergency.
- Feel the panel cover and any warm outlet plate. Warmth at a receptacle or breaker is not normal and is worth reporting.
