What supply pipe is in your walls?
Pick the decade your house was built. Oklahoma stock spans everything from galvanized to PEX.
Before 1940

Galvanized steel supply, and by now the bore is substantially closed by internal corrosion. The outside looks sound while pressure falls everywhere at once. Rust-coloured water on the first draw of the morning is the companion sign. Patching one section moves the restriction rather than removing it.

Galvanized, or copper if the house was repiped at some point. Partial repipes were common – the visible run near the meter got upgraded and the branch lines behind the walls did not. Good pressure at the kitchen and poor pressure at the back bathroom is that pattern.

Copper, and copper of this age is usually fine. What is not fine is the cast iron drain stack, which reaches end of life around sixty to eighty years. If every drain in the house is slow rather than one, that is the stack rather than a clog.

1978 to 1995

This is the polybutylene window. Gray, sometimes blue or black flexible plastic, stamped PB2110. The pipe often survives; the acetal insert fittings crack. Look at the pipe entering the water heater or at the main shutoff. Many insurers now decline or surcharge homes still on it.

Copper or early PEX. Both are sound. On slab construction the thing to know is that a leak tracks laterally under the slab and surfaces well away from the actual failure, which is why a warm patch on the floor gets located before any concrete is cut.

After 2005

PEX, almost certainly, and it will outlast most other things in the house. The failures at this age are fittings, supply connectors and fixture cartridges rather than pipe. Plastic-nut connectors on toilets and faucets crack – replacing them with braided stainless is inexpensive and worth doing before they fail.

Not sure of the build year? The county assessor record has it, and it is public.
