Water heater repair
Sooner Home Services
Most water heater problems are the thermostat, the heating element or the gas control valve, not the tank. A tank only needs replacing when it is leaking from the body itself.
Check the serial sticker for the manufacture date first. Water at the base can be condensation, a fitting, or the tank — trace it upward before assuming the worst. If the relief valve is discharging, that is a pressure or temperature problem to solve rather than a valve to cap.
Which failure you have depends heavily on the fuel. On a gas heater, no hot water usually means the pilot, thermocouple or gas control valve. On electric it is normally one of two heating elements, which is why you often get lukewarm water rather than none at all. Heating fuel varies sharply by town — Bixby runs 75% utility gas while Muskogee is 56% electric — so the likely answer differs depending on where you are.
If you are replacing rather than repairing, check the size you actually need rather than matching whatever was fitted before.
