Hvac in Stillwater, Oklahoma
Sooner Home Services
Stillwater is newer than most of Oklahoma – 44% of its 22,353 units predate 1980, which in practice means 90s split systems hitting 30 years, with coils that leak faster than they fail outright. Stillwater leans electric for heat, 48% against 48% gas. 3.3% of Stillwater heats with bottled or tank propane, which is high for a place this size and points to a fringe that is not on the gas main.
What we get called for in Stillwater
Flex duct crushed or kinked in the attic
Flex became standard in this era and it is easy to damage. Anything walked on, pinched over a joist or bent tighter than its own diameter is throttled. You can see most of it from the attic hatch with a torch.
Heat pump runs constantly below freezing
Heat pumps lose capacity as outdoor temperature drops and lean on electric strip heat below roughly 35 degrees. In an Oklahoma ice event that is why the bill spikes. It is expected behavior, not a fault – but if strips are running in mild weather, the changeover setting is wrong.
SEER 10 system still running at thirty years
It works, which is why nobody replaces it. Compare a summer of running cost against a quote before deciding – at this age the arithmetic sometimes favors keeping it and sometimes does not, and it depends on your rate and your run hours, not on a rule of thumb.
What this costs here
| Filter change | $0 – do it yourself |
| Coil rinse | $0 – do it yourself |
| Capacitor replacement | $195-345 |
| Condensate line clear | $160-275 |
| Duct sealing, whole house | $2,000-3,900 |
| AC replacement, 3 ton | $7,000-11,500 |
Ranges reflect Stillwater-area labor against a $237,200 median. Two of these you can do yourself for nothing.
Check these first
- Replace the filter and note the date on the frame. Most systems that ‘stop cooling’ in July have a filter nobody has touched since spring.
- Kill power at the outdoor disconnect and rinse the condenser coil from the inside out with a garden hose. Never a pressure washer.
- Find the condensate cleanout near the air handler and clear it with a wet vac before it backs up into the ceiling.
