A toilet that runs is almost always the flapper, and it is a few dollars and ten minutes to fix yourself.
Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If color reaches the bowl within ten minutes without flushing, the flapper is leaking. If the fill valve runs instead, check that the float is set below the overflow tube. A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons a day.
